Ledgewood operates on a Day 1-5 schedule. Your child's class will be assigned a day to come to the library. On that day his/her class will come down to the library to hear a book read and check out two books of their choosing. I believe very strongly in giving students free choice when it comes to library books. I have found that some students will repeatedly go back and choose books by the same author over and over again. Others are consistently drawn to certain characters or subjects. Some kids will come in seeking something they tell me was their parent's favorite! I love letting kids choose something they will enjoy reading/having read to them.
"Make Your Backpack Your Library Books' Home."
That is our library mantra. When a book is not being read, it should be in the child's backpack. This will save many hard feelings as students must return a book in order to check out another. If a student comes to library with a book missing, a reminder slip will be sent home. We do not have overdue fines. Fees are only incurred if a book is damaged or lost. A HUGE culprit of ruined books is leaky water bottles and lunch boxes. Please stress with your child that they need to take time to make sure things are sealed before putting them in their backpacks.
